Outgoing President Joe Biden Reflects on Age, Legacy, Potential Pardons, and Democratic Party Challenges in a Candid Exit Interview
In an exclusive interview with USA Today, outgoing US President Joe Biden expressed confidence that he could have defeated Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
“I thought I had the best chance of beating him,” the 82-year-old said. However, Biden acknowledged concerns about his age, adding, “But who knows what I’ll be like at 86?”
Biden, who dropped out of the race in July, discussed his decision to step aside, citing doubts over his stamina for another four-year term.
Considering Pre-Emptive Pardons
During the interview, Biden revealed he is still deliberating pre-emptive pardons for notable figures, including former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney and ex-health official Dr. Anthony Fauci. He said he had a candid discussion with Trump about the idea after the November election.
“I made it clear there was no need to settle scores,” Biden stated,
adding that Trump “just listened” without pushback.
Biden suggested his final decision on pardons could hinge on Trump’s cabinet picks, noting the unusual dynamic between the two during their meeting.
On His Legacy and Hunter Biden’s Pardon
The outgoing president also defended his controversial decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, who faced criminal charges for tax evasion and illegally purchasing a firearm. Biden emphasized the move was a full and unconditional pardon despite earlier assertions that he wouldn’t intervene.
Critics, including members of his own Democratic Party, questioned Biden’s ability to lead due to his age and mental acuity, urging him to step down earlier in the campaign season.
Trump Praised Biden’s Economic Record
Interestingly, Biden disclosed that Trump complimented his economic policies during their Oval Office conversation. “He thought I was leaving with a good record,” Biden said, reflecting on the unusual exchange.
Democratic Leaders Reflect on 2024 Loss
Following Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat to Trump, prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, suggested the party might have performed better had Biden exited the race sooner.
“When Trump was running again for re-election, I believed the polls showed I could win,” Biden reiterated. “But running at 86? Who the hell knows?”
This marks Biden’s only exit interview with a print publication. His administration has maintained tight control over media access, with no press conferences held since his withdrawal from the race.
