Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has disclosed that Nigeria recorded the loss of 100 lives and property worth ₦67.1 billion to fire outbreaks in 2024. The agency, however, noted that it successfully saved property valued at ₦1.94 trillion and rescued 30,890 lives during various fire emergencies across the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Abdulganiyu Jaji, expressed sympathy for the affected families while emphasizing the need for increased vigilance and adherence to safety regulations.

“In 2024, the Federal Fire Service successfully saved property worth ₦1.94 trillion while recording an estimated loss of ₦67.1 billion to fire incidents. During the same period, 30,890 lives were saved, though we regret the loss of 23 lives. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” Jaji said.

He attributed many of the fire incidents to negligence and non-compliance with safety protocols. The Controller General urged Nigerians to be more vigilant, particularly during the harmattan season, which is associated with increased fire risks due to low humidity and the potential for static sparks or gas explosions.

“Fire is a delicate and dynamic force that requires us to be cautious and vigilant. At this point, I implore operators of fuel stations, petrol tankers, gas refilling stations, and gas cylinder users to strictly adhere to safety protocols to prevent avoidable disasters,” he cautioned.

Looking ahead, Jaji outlined the agency’s priorities for 2025, pledging to improve public safety, enhance response times, and leverage advanced technology to minimize the impact of fire outbreaks.

“Our focus in 2025 remains steadfast on ensuring public safety, saving lives and property, and protecting the environment. We are committed to adopting innovative solutions to enhance our response capabilities,” he added.

Jaji also encouraged Nigerians to prioritize safety in their homes and workplaces and to report potential fire hazards promptly to prevent further tragedies.
