Israel Adesanya Honored as UFC Hall of Fame Inductee Following Dominant Debut
Former two-time UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya received a significant accolade last weekend at UFC 312, more than six years after his thrilling battle with Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236. The UFC announced that this iconic matchup has been inducted into the Hall of Fame’s fight wing, with both fighters set to be honored during an International Fight Week ceremony this summer.
Adesanya’s recent struggles, including back-to-back defeats the first losing streak of his career may have overshadowed his legendary status. Newer fans may overlook his remarkable inaugural middleweight title reign, which launched with a brutal knockout victory over Robert Whittaker. However, prior to his first title shot, Adesanya made a significant impact in 2018, highlighted by an explosive debut against Rob Wilkinson at UFC 221, a performance that captivated audiences.
Adesanya’s Impressive UFC Debut
Leading up to UFC 221, Adesanya’s debut was the focus of considerable attention. Early in the fight against Wilkinson, however, Adesanya encountered his first major challenge in MMA. Wilkinson applied relentless pressure, utilizing clinch tactics that allowed him to land powerful strikes to Adesanya’s midsection. Despite this, Adesanya demonstrated his resilience, thwarting several takedown attempts and working out of dangerous positions.
Once Adesanya managed to create space midway through the first frame, he returned to his striking game, quickly bruising Wilkinson’s face and countering another wrestling attack from the Australian. By the end of a competitive first round, it was clear Wilkinson was tiring as they entered the second. Adesanya capitalized on this, advancing on the feet and forcing Wilkinson defensively.
In the second round, Adesanya wore down his opponent, ultimately breaking Wilkinson’s nose with a knee strike. He concluded the bout midway through the round, overwhelming Wilkinson with precise striking.
Adesanya’s Next Chapter: Possible Training Partnership with Former Rival
Following recent losses to UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis and Nassourdine Imavov, Adesanya has hinted at retirement but has since reconsidered that stance. He’s anticipated to make a return to the Octagon later this year and may seek guidance from a former rival.
Adesanya and Alex Pereira were recently spotted together at cageside during UFC 312, drawing positive attention from fans. Following their interactions, Pereira extended an invitation for training together, potentially ahead of his own fight at UFC 313. Adesanya seemed receptive to this offer, suggesting the two renowned fighters may collaborate in preparation for his next bout. Prior to his last fight at UFC Saudi Arabia, Adesanya also made headlines by reuniting with Robert Whittaker in a training session that excited many fans.
In a noteworthy twist, Adesanya and Wilkinson have developed a close friendship seven years after their encounter at UFC 221. Without the dominating display in his debut, Adesanya’s journey to the UFC Hall of Fame might not have been possible.
