Italian Tennis Sensation Jannik Sinner Suspended for Three Months After Doping Case Settlement, Expected to Return for French Open

World number one Jannik Sinner has been handed a three-month suspension from tennis after reaching a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) over two positive drug tests from last year.

The 23-year-old Italian star, who recently claimed his maiden Australian Open title in January, will be sidelined from 9 February to 4 May. Despite the ban, Sinner will be eligible to return just in time for the French Open, which kicks off on 19 May.

WADA Accepts Contamination Explanation

WADA accepted Sinner’s explanation that his positive tests for clostebol were due to inadvertent contamination by his physiotherapist.

The suspension follows WADA’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against an initial ruling that had cleared Sinner of wrongdoing. However, after reviewing the case, WADA accepted Sinner’s explanation that his positive tests for clostebol were due to inadvertent contamination by his physiotherapist.

The agency acknowledged that the three-time Grand Slam champion

“did not intend to cheat” and that the banned substance “did not provide any performance-enhancing benefit.”

Nonetheless, WADA stated that under anti-doping regulations, athletes are ultimately responsible for the negligence of their entourage.

“Based on the unique set of facts of this case, a three-month suspension is deemed to be an appropriate outcome,”

WADA said in a statement.
