From Setbacks to Success: How Dr. S.O. Samson Overcame 33 Years of Academic Struggles, Personal Losses, and Financial Hardships to Achieve His Dream of Becoming a Veterinary Doctor

A 53-year-old Nigerian man, Dr. S.O. Samson, fondly known as Gbogidi, has proven that perseverance pays off as he finally achieved his dream of becoming a veterinary doctor after a remarkable 33-year academic journey.

A Journey of Resilience

Dr. Samson’s pursuit of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree began in 1992 when he gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. However, his path was anything but smooth. He faced multiple withdrawals, first in 1992, then in 2002, and again in 2011 at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID). Despite these setbacks, he remained steadfast.

Sharing his inspiring story, Muhammad Hashim Suleiman revealed on Facebook that Dr. Samson encountered severe challenges. Family support dwindled, and he had his own family to care for. He lost his father in 2000, his mother in 2018, and even suffered the painful loss of a daughter. Yet, he refused to give up.

A Comeback Against All Odds

In 2013, he found the courage to try again, securing another admission at ABU Zaria. With the backing of faculty members, some of whom had advanced to associate professor roles while he struggled, he pressed on. Financial hardships and personal tragedies did not deter him. Instead, he persevered, determined to cross the finish line.

Finally, on February 15, 2025, Dr. Samson was inducted into the veterinary profession with the U16VM set. The moment was emotional as he reflected on the loved ones he had lost along the way, wishing they were present to witness his triumph.

A Surprise Reward for Resilience

During the induction ceremony, five students from his class graduated with First-Class Honors and received cash prizes. However, the highlight of the event was the special recognition given to Dr. Samson for his unwavering determination.

The President of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Dr. Moses Arokoyo, honored him with a cash reward of N1,000,000. Another dignitary at the event added N100,000, bringing his total award to N1.1 million. Overwhelmed with emotions, Dr. Samson broke down in tears, a testament to the weight of his journey and the sweetness of his victory.

Born in 1972, Dr. Samson lost his father in 2000, got married in 2008, and fathered four children, tragically losing one. His mother passed away in 2018, never witnessing his success. Yet, against all odds, he emerged victorious.

Celebrating his incredible journey, Suleiman described Dr. Samson’s story as a powerful reminder that with faith, determination, and resilience, no dream is too big or too far to reach.
