Makinde Sets Timeline for 2027 Succession Plan, Says Preferred Candidate’s Identity Will Be Revealed in January 2026
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has revealed that he will disclose his preferred successor in January 2026, ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.
Makinde made the announcement on Monday at the 11th Omituntun Ramadan lecture, held at the government house arcade in Ibadan. The lecture, themed “Benefits of Being a Good Neighbour: An Islamic Perspective,” was delivered by Yunus Olushina Teliat, the grand chief Imam of Ogbomosoland.
The event was attended by religious and political figures, including former Oyo Governor Rashidi Ladoja. Speaking in Yoruba, Makinde expressed gratitude to Muslim leaders for their support and urged them to continue praying for his administration.

The governor dismissed any notion that he is winding down his administration, stating that he remains active in governance. He also acknowledged that some politicians are exploring “other ventures” as the 2027 election approaches.
Addressing popular socialite Abbas Oloko, Makinde humorously noted that his billboard at Isale Alfa should remain intact, as it will feature the image of his preferred successor in January 2026.
“As political activities begin in 2026, I will reveal the person whose picture will be placed on that billboard,”
Makinde said.
He further urged Muslims to use the Ramadan season to promote peace and unity across religious divides.
Makinde, who has been in office since 2019, will complete his second term in 2027.
