Governor Douye Diri had earlier raised concerns over the proposed event, warning that it could heighten political tensions and pose a threat to public peace, especially in light of the ongoing political unrest in neighbouring Rivers State where Wike plays a significant role.

Yenagoa, Nigeria – A Bayelsa State High Court sitting in Yenagoa has issued an interim injunction stopping a planned political rally in support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The ruling, delivered on Thursday by Justice I.A. Uzakah, follows a motion ex parte filed by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biriyai Dambo (SAN). The order restrains Wike’s associates from organizing the rally, originally scheduled to hold in Yenagoa on April 12, 2025.

The suit, marked BYHC/YHC/CV/133/2025, lists the NEW Associates—organisers of the rally—alongside Mr. George Turnah and Minister Nyesom Wike as the first and second defendants. Also joined in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police.

According to the court order, the defendants have been barred “either by themselves or through their agents, representatives, or any person acting on their instruction” from convening or taking part in any political assembly, rally, or event in Bayelsa State aimed at celebrating or showing solidarity with the second defendant, Wike, until the substantive motion for interlocutory injunction is heard and determined.

The matter has been scheduled for hearing on April 11, 2025.

Governor Douye Diri had earlier raised concerns over the proposed event, warning that it could heighten political tensions and pose a threat to public peace, especially in light of the ongoing political unrest in neighbouring Rivers State where Wike plays a significant role.
