Kaduna – Former President Muhammadu Buhari has urged leaders at all levels to focus on the welfare of the people rather than their personal interests, emphasizing that public service should be rooted in selflessness and national progress.

Speaking during a visit by governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to his residence in Kaduna, Buhari noted that he left office with the same physical assets he had before assuming the presidency. He described leadership as both a challenge and an opportunity, stressing that adopting a citizen-centric approach is key to advancing the nation’s development.

The former president expressed appreciation to the Bola Tinubu administration for renovating his Kaduna home, stating that although the exterior remained largely unchanged, significant improvements had been made inside the building. He also thanked the visiting governors, noting that while he had previously worked with some of them, others were new faces.

Earlier, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said the delegation visited the former leader to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr with him and to express deep appreciation for his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and the APC’s growth.

In a statement issued by Buhari’s former media aide, Mallam Garba Shehu, Uzodimma commended Buhari for his pivotal role in the formation of the APC, saying his legacy continues to define the party’s identity and trajectory.

“We are especially gratified by your recent reaffirmation that the APC remains your party of choice. That declaration came at a crucial moment and reaffirmed your place as a pillar of our movement,” Uzodimma stated. “Your Excellency, your legacy in Nigerian history is secure. You remain the only opposition candidate to have defeated a sitting president.”

He lauded Buhari’s administration for entrenching the APC’s progressive values through policies that prioritized security, economic recovery, and anti-corruption. He highlighted achievements such as the recovery of territories from insurgents, the introduction of social investment programs like the Conditional Cash Transfer and School Feeding Programme, and infrastructure developments in road and rail transport.

Programs like the Anchor Borrowers Scheme, Uzodimma added, had tangible impacts on food security, while the administration’s “eat what you produce” mantra helped promote agricultural sustainability and self-reliance.

“You brought dignity to governance and strengthened the ethos of our party. Today, the APC is being renewed and repositioned under your worthy successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he noted.

Describing Tinubu’s leadership as bold, reform-oriented, and unwaveringly progressive, Uzodimma commended Buhari’s public endorsement of the current president, calling it a symbol of continuity and humility.

He concluded by urging the former president to continue offering guidance and support as the party moves forward, seeking to consolidate progressive governance and maintain political dominance for a more prosperous Nigeria.
