In a formal statement titled “My Decision to Withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries,” Fubara said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates.”

He stated that although the decision was difficult, it was made in the interest of the greater good, stressing that leadership often demands personal sacrifice over ambition.

“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest.”

The governor also expressed appreciation to his supporters for their loyalty throughout the political process, acknowledging the emotional and material investment many had made in his candidacy.

“To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey… I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel. Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way. But please know that your loyalty and trust were never in vain.”

Fubara added that his earlier silence on the matter was intentional and guided by what he described as “strategic restraint” in the interest of the state.

He further referenced behind-the-scenes pressures and difficult decisions, but maintained that his commitment to Rivers State remained unchanged.

The governor thanked the All Progressives Congress for providing him with a political platform, and also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement and support.

Fubara urged party members to remain united ahead of the primaries, insisting that the APC remains a collective political home and should continue to work toward a stronger and more cohesive future.

He concluded by clarifying that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness or defeat, but as a conscious act of political sacrifice.

“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside… not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity.”

Fubara also reaffirmed that he remains committed to serving out his current mandate as governor of Rivers State.
