Some Nigerian students drawn from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and from the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State have emerged first place in the 2020 Huawei Global ICT Competition.
In the contest, where over one 1500 participants made up of 110 teams (330 students) from 39 countries and regions competed in cloud and network examination, the Nigerian team won the first place grand position.
The competition under the theme “Connection · Glory · Future“, honored the students for their achievement at an online awards ceremony hosted from the Huawei Headquarters in China.
This year’s edition marks the fifth iteration of the Huawei ICT Competition, which includes the Practice and Innovation Competitions.
The competition which is in two tracks — Network and Cloud, mainly examines students’ ICT knowledge, hands-on skills, and teamwork. The Innovation Competition evaluates students’ capabilities in terms of innovation, cooperation, and development as well as deployment by using cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, big data, and AI.
In a video speech delivered by Mr. Sun Gang who is the Director of Huawei’s Talent Ecosystem Development Department at the opening ceremony, he said that, by 2030, we will live in an intelligent world and that new technologies require new talent, which means talent is crucial for ICT development.
He further mentioned that the tech giant, Huawei, aims to develop ICT talent, build a robust talent ecosystem, and promote a prosperous industry by setting standards, building a talent alliance, and demonstrating the value of talent.
Huawei will continue striving to provide equal access to high-quality education and achieve digital inclusion.

The Nigerian team was honored in a closing award ceremony event which held at the Huawei Nigeria (Abuja) office and was attended by government functionaries, Huawei management staff, the award-winning students, instructors, parents and the media.
Presidency congratulates Nigerian team for emerging first place in ICT competition
In a virtual ceremony to celebrate and honor Team Nigeria at the 2020 Huawei ICT global competition, the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Team Nigeria for coming first place in the competition.
Represented by Mr. Nasir Sa’idu Adhama, Special Assistant on Youth & Students Affairs, the president noted that the achievement is an excellent performance and outstanding improvement from last year in which Team Nigeria had emerged third position in the same global competition.
“I congratulate the Nigerian students for coming this far in this Global ICT Competition. I also thank Huawei for supporting our students and hope Huawei will continue to partner with the country in developing our ICT capabilities.”

Other dignitaries present at the ceremony were the representative of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, Dr. Abimbola Alale, the Managing Director/CEO, NIGCOMSAT, the representative of the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Mr. Chris Maiyaki, Deputy Executive Secretary of the NUC.
