The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has seen about 352 civilians, including 14 children, killed, about 1694 people, including 116 children, wounded and about 850,114 displaced in eight days of military offensives launched by the Russian government in Ukraine, according to the United Nations.
These figures are however conflicting with those provided by the US, Russia and Ukraine.
Russia’s advance on Ukrainian cities intensifies as war enters a second week, displacing a million people. A second round of talks is expected in Belarus on Thursday.
The death toll continues to rise as more buildings are bombed and more casualties rise by the day.
Russia Loses Top Army General In War Against Ukraine
The war is not without losses on the Russian end as it was reported that the second most powerful nation on earth lost one of its general, Andrei Sukhovetsky, the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of the Central Military District, in the war with Ukraine.
Sukhovetsky was said to have died on Wednesday, according to Ukrainian news outlets.
498 Russian Servicemen Killed in Ukraine
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence announced that 498 of its servicemen had been killed, more than 1,500 were injured since the invasion of Ukraine was launched last Thursday.
The spokesman for the Ministry, Igor Konashenkov, on Wednesday, rejected reports about ‘incalculable losses’ among Russian forces as ‘disinformation’.
But Ukraine had argued that the true number of Russian troops killed is higher than what Moscow admits.
Konashenkov denied that conscripts or cadets have been involved in the operation in Ukraine, dismissing media reports suggesting otherwise.
But Russian independent organisations that help parents find their sons have said conscripts were taking part and had been made to sign documents before crossing the border.
Konashenkov also said more than 2,870 Ukrainian troops have been killed and some 3,700 more sustained injuries, while 572 others have been captured by the Russians.
These figures could not be independently verified.
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said that it has recorded 752 civilian casualties since the start of Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
It said that up till midnight on March 1, the UN had recorded 227 killed, including 15 under the age of 18, and 525 injured.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine started on February 24 and has now entered its eight day of military offensives.
Since then, Ukraine has suffered widespread damages to its infrastructures and loss of lives amid Russia’s major bombing campaign.
UN Condemns Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
The United Nations General Assembly approved a non-binding resolution condemning Russia for the invasion of Ukraine and demanding an immediate withdrawal.
The resolution, supported by 141 of the assembly’s 193 members, passed in a rare emergency session called by the UN Security Council.
Russia was joined by Belarus, which has served as a launch pad for Russian invasion forces, Eritrea, North Korea and Syria in voting against the resolution. Thirty-five members, including China, abstained. 12 nations did not vote.
