Historic Emmy Nomination for Young Nigerian Voice Actress Simisola Gbadamosi
Simisola Gbadamosi, a remarkable 13-year-old voice actress from Nigeria, has etched her name in history as the youngest Nigerian to earn an Emmy nomination. She received this prestigious acknowledgment for her performance as Tola in the animated miniseries Iwájú, a collaborative creation between Disney and Kugali Media, which focuses on the rich narratives of African culture.
The series, set against the backdrop of a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, premiered on February 28, 2024, and has quickly gained critical acclaim and a strong fan following. Celebrated for its engaging storytelling and vibrant visual style, Iwájú tackles profound themes such as socioeconomic inequality, technology, and familial bonds, presenting a unique perspective on urban life in Africa.
Simisola’s nomination is part of a trio of recognitions for Iwájú at the upcoming Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, which are set to occur on March 15 in Los Angeles, California. In addition to Simisola’s nomination for Outstanding Younger Voice Performer in a Preschool, Children’s, or Young Teen Program, the series has also received nods for Outstanding Children’s or Young Teen Animated Series and Outstanding Directing for an Animated Series.
Simisola’s achievement marks a groundbreaking moment for Nigeria, establishing Iwájú as the first Nigerian television production to be nominated for an Emmy in this category. “Bringing Tola to life in Iwájú has been an incredible experience,” she remarked. “This project holds a special place in my heart, and I’m honored to contribute to a story that highlights innovation, culture, and African narratives.”
