The viral news story alleging that 7 bags of human bodies were dumped around Iwofe road, in the Port Harcourt metropolis of Rivers state, has now gone viral on the Nigerian social media space.
The smelly bags were said to have polluted the environs, affecting commercial activities in the area. The bizarre scene attracted hundreds of onlookers as the bags were suspected to be containing human remains.
Many online blogs reported the story. @PortHarcourt_specials, an online blog posted the story on its Instagram handle on October 9, 2024. It attracted more than 2000 comments with one of the users, who goes by the name @Trophy_Boyyyy saying, “No be lie 😂😂😂😂😂 butchers are in town”(sic). Another user commented, ” When will girls stop hookup business? They keep using them for rituals.”
A user on Facebook by the name Ocj Stephen posted on the subject, “Seven bags of human heads found around OPM Junction Iwofe Road. Boys wan meet up overnight before December.” (sic). His post attracted many comments with some users confirming to have seen the alleged bags earlier.
Despite it virality, REPORT AFRIQUE found the story to be untrue.
Not Human Bodies But Poultry Wastes – RIWAM
There were indeed 7 sacks of bags dumped at Iwofe road by unknown persons that oozed foul smell, suspected to be dead human bodies, but were not. The alleged bags contained poultry wastes.
The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) confirmed the actual content of the bags in a Facebook post on its official page.
“Bags of filled poultry waste polluting the environment around IWOFE road has been cleared. Residents and commuters plying that route can now go about their normal activities.” Riwama posted.
The post was accompanied by a video of staff of Riwama evacuating the bags.
