Equatorial Guinea's Financial Chief Arrested After 400 Sextapes Leaked Online
Equatorial Guinea’s Financial Investigation Chief Arrested Amidst Sextape Scandal Involving Prominent Wives

The Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) in Equatorial Guinea, Baltasar Engonga, has been taken into custody following revelations that he allegedly recorded over 400 intimate videos involving the wives of influential individuals throughout the nation.

The controversy surfaced during a separate investigation into fraud, leading ANIF officials to conduct an unexpected search of the 54-year-old economist’s residence and workplace. During this search, they uncovered numerous CDs that unveiled Engonga’s sexual encounters with various married women.

Reports indicate that the footage features encounters with several high-profile figures, including the spouse of his brother, his cousin, the sister of Equatorial Guinea’s President, the wife of the Director General of Police, and approximately 20 wives of government ministers, among others. This footage, found in his personal office, was allegedly recorded with the participants’ consent and has since been leaked online, igniting a media firestorm.

Local news outlet Ahora EG reported that Engonga, who is also known as “Bello,” has been embroiled in a scandal of this nature that is unprecedented in the country’s history. The former ANIF chief reportedly engaged in sexual relationships with a range of women, including some who are married, all while documenting these private moments. Notably, some of these encounters were said to have occurred in his office, with one instance taking place next to the National Flag.

In response to the scandal, the Equatorial Guinean government has announced new regulations aimed at reinforcing expected conduct among public officials, aspiring to foster a more respectful atmosphere within both public and private sectors. For several days, sexually explicit videos of Engonga have circulated on social media, leading to his current detention over allegations of corruption.

The Attorney General, Nzang Nguema, commented on the situation, indicating that while the videos imply that the women participated voluntarily, the law only classifies sexual relations as criminal when evidence of coercion or violence exists. He underscored the necessity for victims to report instances of sexual assault or abuse, highlighting the risks not just for the women involved, but also for their partners and the broader community, particularly concerning potential exposure to sexually transmitted diseases.

Ngeuma reiterated that addressing such issues requires creating a supportive environment for victims to feel comfortable coming forward, especially in cases of assault or abuse.

In light of these developments, Equatorial Guinea’s government has decided to take immediate action, suspending all officials found to have engaged in sexual relations within government ministries. This measure is part of their “zero tolerance” policy against behaviors that undermine the integrity of public service.

Vice President Nguema Mangue stressed that such conduct is a serious violation of the established Code of Conduct and Public Ethics Law. In a statement on social media platform X, he emphasized that ethical behavior and respect are vital to the administration, asserting that reckless actions which jeopardize public trust will not be tolerated.
