Bayelsa Governor Commends Military for Combatting Oil Theft in Niger Delta
Bayelsa State – Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has praised the military for its efforts to significantly reduce crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region. During a courtesy visit from the Defence Headquarters Joint Monitoring Team, led by Major General Jamil Jimoh, at the Government House in Yenagoa, Diri announced the state’s intention to collaborate with the military to further combat the issues of oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
Diri expressed satisfaction with the military’s proactive role in shifting the narrative around oil bunkering within the region. He conveyed his belief that enhanced cooperation among security agencies and key stakeholders in the oil industry would contribute to minimizing oil theft and boosting production. The governor emphasized that his administration is already committed to addressing crude theft, environmental pollution, and pipeline vandalism.
In his remarks, Diri outlined initiatives taken by his government, including the establishment of local government committees focused on combatting oil theft and raising awareness among the youth through advocacy campaigns. He highlighted the critical link between increased crude oil production from the state and the enhancement of revenue allocations from the 13% derivation fund, arguing against the current practice where states must seek funds from the federal government.
Additionally, Diri called for a shift towards true federalism, advocating for states to have the autonomy to manage their resources and contribute taxes to the federal government, thereby enabling them to progress independently.
He urged oil companies operating within the region to upgrade outdated equipment to prevent frequent failures and subsequent spills, which are often mistakenly attributed to sabotage.
“As a state, we have indeed begun taking action. Previously, there were allegations of military involvement in oil theft,” said Diri. “However, I am pleased to see the military now taking the lead in this endeavor alongside other security agencies, including the police and the NSCDC, which signals unity among our forces.”
He added, “It’s extremely disheartening to hear accusations against our military regarding oil theft. If those tasked with ensuring security and working with civilian authorities are complicit, it seems we may never see an end to these issues. Therefore, I am encouraged by the military’s leadership in this fight and assure you of our unwavering support.”
General Jamil Jimoh, the team leader, praised Governor Diri for his developmental initiatives and efforts to combat the pressing issues of oil theft and pipeline vandalism. He stressed the importance of support from the state government in securing oil facilities within the Niger Delta and enhancing crude oil production.
