In a significant turn of events, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has officially retired as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) today, August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Ariwoola, who has served as Nigeria’s 22nd CJN, was appointed to this esteemed position in June 2022 following the resignation of Justice Tanko Muhammad. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola tenure as CJN though brief, has been marked by significant judicial decisions and reforms.
His departure now paves the way for Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the most senior justice of the Supreme Court, who is poised to become the second female Chief Justice in Nigeria’s history. She is expected to assume office in an acting capacity, continuing the tradition of seniority in the Supreme Court’s leadership.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s impending appointment is historic, as she follows in the footsteps of Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, who was Nigeria’s first female CJN. The Supreme Court has already set the stage for a valedictory session in honor of Ariwoola, reflecting on his contributions to the judiciary.
