Customs Launches Auction of Smuggled Fuel, Urges Public Cooperation to Tackle Illegal Trade
In a bold move against fuel smuggling, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has ordered the auction of seized petrol in Adamawa at the price of N630 per litre. This announcement was made during a press conference on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, in Yola, the state capital.
Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General Aliyu Alajogun, highlighted the significant achievements of Operation Whirlwind, which recently led to the seizure of two lorries, 1,046 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and 12 drums of petroleum products.
“This latest phase of Operation Whirlwind has successfully targeted smuggling activities, resulting in substantial seizures across various locations,” said Alajogun. “Our efforts have focused on regions including the Sokoto-Kebbi axis in the North-West, the Seme-Badagry and Idiroko borders in the South-West, and the southern borders in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.”
In addition to the seized goods, authorities apprehended one suspect linked to these smuggling operations. Alajogun stressed the importance of continuous vigilance, warning that the full force of the law would be enforced against anyone caught engaging in illegal activities.
He urged Nigerians, particularly those in Adamawa and other border states, to support the Customs Service in their operations. “Your vigilance and cooperation are crucial in protecting our nation’s resources and ensuring that the benefits of fuel price deregulation are realized for all citizens,” he added.
The auction of the seized products will take place at two petrol stations in Yola, allowing the community to benefit directly from these recovered resources.
