Dangote Refinery Exports Aviation Fuel to U.S.: A Milestone for Nigeria
The United States imported over two million barrels of aviation fuel from the Dangote refinery in March. This achievement was confirmed by the refinery in a statement released on Tuesday, emphasizing the “unparalleled quality” of its products and the confidence that the international market places in its operations.
According to data from ship-tracking service Kpler, six vessels carrying approximately 1.7 million barrels of jet fuel from the Dangote refinery reached various U.S. ports throughout the month. In addition, another ship, the Hafnia Andromeda, is anticipated to arrive at the Everglades terminal on March 29 with an estimated 348,000 barrels of jet fuel on board.
The exports underscore the Dangote refinery’s impressive capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and underscore its potential to transform global fuel trading dynamics by becoming a new swing supplier in the Atlantic Basin.
As noted in the statement, “This shipment to the United States follows three cargoes of jet fuel, totalling around 130 million litres, exported from Nigeria to Saudi Arabia by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.” The facility has already proven its competitive edge against European refineries in gasoline exports, and the recent jet fuel shipments to the U.S. pose a challenge to domestic producers in the world’s largest fuel-consuming country.
Dr. Muda Yusuf, an economist and the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises, commented on the significance of this milestone. “For us as a nation, it brings immense pride that we now have a refinery capable of producing products that meet export demand in the United States. This reflects the high quality, standards, and trust that international markets have in the Dangote refinery. These are buyers who prioritize quality and do not compromise; if they choose to source from Nigeria, it is a matter of great pride,” he stated.
