TikTok Influencer Murja Kunya Arrested by EFCC for Alleged Naira Abuse
Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), under the Kano State Zonal Directorate, have apprehended popular TikTok influencer Murja Kunya on charges of naira abuse. The arrest was confirmed in a statement released by the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Monday.
The EFCC reported that Kunya was taken into custody for allegedly spraying naira notes in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace during her stay, which is prohibited under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act. This legislation specifically forbids the abuse and mutilation of the national currency.
Kunya’s current arrest follows an earlier incident in January 2025 when she was initially detained for violating the same CBN regulations. After her first arrest, she was granted administrative bail as she awaited her arraignment at the Federal High Court in Kano. However, she failed to appear in court and subsequently fled, avoiding legal consequences.
After weeks of thorough investigation and surveillance, EFCC operatives succeeded in re-arresting Kunya on Sunday, March 16, 2025. She is now being held at the Kano Zonal Directorate of the commission, where she awaits her upcoming arraignment.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to upholding the laws that protect the integrity of Nigeria’s currency, issuing a warning against abusing the naira through actions such as spraying, stamping, or mutilating the currency during social events.
