Nigeria’s education minister, Tahir Mamman emphasized that the government would not limit the certificate suspension to Benin and Togo alone but would cast a wider net over countries harboring institutions facilitating the swift acquisition of degrees.
This decision comes in the wake of an undercover journalist’s exposé, revealing the ease with which one could obtain a degree from a university in Benin Republic within a remarkably short period for a fee. The journalist even highlighted instances where these degrees were used to qualify for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The Federal Government promptly suspended accreditation for certificates from both Benin and Togo, launching a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of certification racketeering set to conclude in three months.
Minister Mamman took a stern stance, asserting that students engaging in such practices are not victims but active participants in criminal activities. He expressed no sympathy for individuals involved, categorizing them as part of a criminal network. Additionally, the minister announced that security agencies would pursue individuals utilizing fraudulent foreign certificates to secure opportunities within Nigeria.
The government’s decisive actions aim to curb the prevalence of fake qualifications and maintain the integrity of educational credentials in the country.
