Nigerian Government Launches Free AI Academy to Boost Digital Economy
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the establishment of a complimentary Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy aimed at placing the nation at the forefront of the global digital economy. Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, officially inaugurated the AI Academy on Thursday in Abuja, highlighting that the initiative is a collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat and Intel Corporation.
During the launch, Nnaji stressed that the online program is free of charge and encouraged all Nigerians, especially students, youth, and civil servants, to seize the opportunity to participate in this transformative initiative. “The AI Academy is free, and registration is now open until January 30, 2025. I invite you to visit our website at https://scienceandtech.gov.ng/academy to take advantage of this chance to gain essential AI skills,” he urged.
The minister described the AI Academy as not just a training platform but a pivotal opportunity for Nigerians of all backgrounds to gain significant skills in artificial intelligence, enabling them to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven world. “AI is revolutionizing industries, addressing complex challenges, and opening new economic avenues; hence, it is crucial for Nigeria to not only stay up-to-date but to lead the way,” he stated.
According to Nnaji, the program will offer participants self-paced courses covering the basics of AI, its ethical considerations, various tools, and practical applications. In addition to learning about AI technology, students will have the chance to compete for ambassadorial roles and internships with Intel Corporation, providing them with hands-on global experience.
The minister underscored the critical role AI can play in nation-building, stating that it has transitioned from a theoretical concept to a transformative resource that can significantly impact sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and security.
“By equipping our citizens with these vital skills, we aim to not only prepare them for employment but also cultivate a new generation of innovators and problem-solvers who will help define Nigeria’s technological and economic future,” Nnaji asserted. “Moreover, AI will be instrumental in developing innovative solutions to the unique challenges we face as a country.”
The minister expressed his gratitude to the Commonwealth Secretariat and Intel Corporation for their steadfast support, emphasizing that this partnership illustrates the strength of collaborative efforts among government, industry, and international organizations. “With the launch of the AI Academy, we are establishing the groundwork for a new era of innovation, one in which Nigeria claims its rightful status as a leader in the global digital economy,” he concluded.
