Mele Kyari Reflects on Journey from Almajiri Pupil to CEO of Nigeria’s Largest Energy Company on 60th Birthday

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), commemorated his 60th birthday by reflecting on his remarkable ascension from being an Almajiri school pupil to leading Africa’s foremost energy company. Having served at NNPC for 32 years, Kyari expressed his gratitude towards Nigeria and the opportunities it has afforded him throughout his life.

Born on January 8, 1965, Kyari was appointed as CEO by former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2019. In his poignant post on X, he acknowledged the grace of Allah for allowing him to reach this significant milestone. He expressed profound appreciation to both Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting him the honor to serve as the last Group Managing Director of the NNPC and the inaugural CEO of NNPC Ltd.

Kyari described his life story as one filled with both challenges and victories, attributing his success to divine intervention. He expressed a desire for forgiveness from anyone he may have unintentionally offended throughout his journey.

“Merely reflecting backward cannot encompass the many extraordinary experiences I have had up to this point—the good and the bad, trials and triumphs, pain and joy, failures and successes. Only the grace of Allah can account for my journey,” he stated.

He emphasized that this milestone represents a turning point in his life and expressed a renewed commitment to serve the nation with greater dedication. Kyari also acknowledged the sacrifices of his family, admitting to their absence during much of his public service career due to his commitment to the nation’s welfare.

Kyari extended his gratitude to his family, friends, associates, colleagues, and mentors—from both traditional Almajiri backgrounds and Western education—recognizing their crucial contributions to his accomplishments and overall well-being.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Kyari is determined to serve with heightened conviction, aspiring for eternal fulfillment and rewarding service to his country.
