Federal Government Releases Funds for Salary Arrears of NASU Members and Pensioners’ Benefits

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated funds to address outstanding salary payments owed to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Federal Universities, as well as to disburse benefits to retirees covered under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

In a statement released on Saturday, Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), confirmed that payments to NASU members have already commenced, with several individuals indicating that they have received their dues.

The statement highlighted, “The Federal Government has released funds designated for the payment of withheld salaries of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities.” Furthermore, the OAGF announced that financial resources have also been made available for paying benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

The OAGF reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees. This announcement comes in the wake of an indefinite strike initiated by the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and NASU, which began on Monday due to the non-payment of salaries for four months.

Since the strike commenced, activities have come to a standstill in universities nationwide. In an interview earlier this week, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, the National President of SSANU, revealed that top university officials, including vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, have also faced four months without salary, emphasizing that universities will remain shut until all payments are fulfilled.
