Augustine Eguavoen To Lead Super Eagles As Bruno Labbadia Rejects Appointment
Stringent tax regulations from German authorities have thwarted the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) plans to appoint Bruno Labbadia as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The disagreement centers on the substantial tax burden that would fall on the NFF, potentially consuming 32% to 40% of Labbadia’s salary.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau stated on Friday evening, “We have been grappling with the tax issue for three days. It became clear that the NFF could not bear the additional tax expenses on top of the agreed salary. We were unable to accommodate the full tax amount, despite Labbadia’s initial agreement on the terms.”
With Labbadia’s appointment now off the table, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, the NFF Technical Director, will lead the Super Eagles for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic (Uyo, September 7) and Rwanda (Kigali, September 10). This will mark Eguavoen’s fourth tenure as head coach of the Nigerian national team, having previously managed the team in 2005-2007, 2010, and 2022.
