Nigeria Is Changing, better days Are Ahead — President Tinubu
Tinubu Confidents in Positive Changes Ahead for Nigeria Amidst Economic and Security Challenges

President Bola Tinubu has voiced optimism about the significant transformations occurring in Nigeria, particularly in the realms of security and the economy. In a speech delivered by National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu during the graduation ceremony for the Executive Intelligence Management Course 17 at the National Institute for Security Studies in Abuja on Saturday, Tinubu acknowledged the nation’s current challenges while affirming that progress is being made.

“Changes are taking place in our nation today. While some may disagree with our methods, fundamentally, Nigeria is undergoing a shift. Real change is coming,” Tinubu conveyed.

The president underscored the complexities linked to Nigeria’s economic hurdles but reassured citizens that brighter days are on the horizon. “Our economy is evolving. We face significant and tough challenges, but I promise you, better times are ahead,” he stated, underscoring his administration’s firm commitment to fostering security and stability across the nation.

In a stern warning to wrongdoers, both domestically and internationally, Tinubu asserted, “If you are a bad actor, whether you’re inside Nigeria or outside, know that you are in trouble. We will pursue you and bring you to justice.”

In related remarks, Babaginda Aliyu, the former governor of Niger State and ex-chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, criticized those opposing the Tax Reform Bills, asserting that many of them have not engaged with the details of the legislation. The bills, including the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024, and the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024, have generated significant debate since their introduction in the National Assembly.

During a meeting held on October 28, governors from the 19 northern states, under the auspices of the Northern Governors Forum, rejected the proposed derivation-based model for Value Added Tax distribution contained in the tax reform bills. The National Economic Council later called for the withdrawal of the bills, urging the president for more extensive consultations.

Aliyu further criticized the government for its ineffective communication surrounding the new policy. He emphasized the necessity for the public to understand that no policy will benefit everyone equally. “I told the NSA that many debating the tax bill have not actually read it. The government must improve its communication, especially since many citizens are not literate. Major policy changes require clear communication for the public to comprehend their implications,” he remarked.

He also proposed stiffer penalties, including the death penalty, for anyone who kills military, police, or other uniformed personnel, arguing such measures could deter the increasing violence against security officers.

Aliyu lambasted governors for shifting blame onto the federal government regarding insecurity issues within their states, questioning the effectiveness of security budgets and reports they receive.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adéọlá Àjàyí, expressed confidence that Nigeria could overcome its security challenges if all agencies operated in sync. “Success is achievable when we collaborate. The synergy between the Chief of Defence Staff and the NSA is unparalleled in my experience. Together, we can prevail over any security issues. Soon, all Nigerians will rest soundly, and I will not let you down,” he assured, expressing gratitude for the presidential appointment and commending the direction of Tinubu’s administration.
