Six-year-old boy shot accidentally by 12-year-old brother

A six-year-old boy has tragically lost his life after being accidentally shot by his 12-year-old brother in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State. The identities of the children have been withheld due to their status as minors, as confirmed by the police.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening in Nukkai, a community within the state capital, sending shockwaves throughout the neighborhood. Addressing journalists on Thursday in Jalingo, Commissioner of Police David Iloyanomon revealed that the parents of the children have been taken into custody, and the case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for more investigation.

Commissioner Iloyanomon expressed grave concern over the incident, noting that there was a similar case of culpable homicide involving minors, prompting the police to extend their investigation to the parents and guardians of the children. While minors cannot be charged with culpable homicide, the investigation has focused on the adults responsible for leaving the firearms accessible to the children.

The firearms involved in the tragedy were described as Dane guns, and the parents and guardians are facing charges for illegal possession of arms. The Commissioner emphasized the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the need for accountability and responsible firearm ownership to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

Local residents recounted their shock upon hearing the gunshot, initially fearing the presence of bandits or kidnappers in the area. This incident has stirred painful memories, coming just weeks after three children lost their lives in Didango Geit village due to an alleged accidental discharge from a Dane gun.

In a separate development, Commissioner Iloyanomon revealed that the police recently conducted a successful operation resulting in the arrest of 28 suspects and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition. The seized items included AK-47 rifles, pistols, live ammunition, motorcycles, knives, and cash, among other items.

The police chief commended the efforts of Governor Agbu Kefas in supporting law enforcement agencies and combating crime in the state. He underscored the commitment of the Taraba State Police Command to maintaining law and order, urging continued cooperation from the public to enhance security efforts.

The tragic shooting incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with firearms and the importance of responsible gun ownership. As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on holding accountable those responsible for negligence that resulted in the loss of a young life.

In the midst of grief and shock, communities are reminded of the need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies from occurring. The incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address gun violence and promote a culture of responsible firearm ownership across the country.
