The Federal Government has made a significant move to address the growing concern of food shortages in the country by donating 20 trucks of rice to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a press briefing at the State House after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday.
According to Idris, the rice is intended for the most vulnerable Nigerians, and each truck carries approximately 1,200 25kg bags of rice. The donation is part of the government’s efforts to ensure that every Nigerian has access to food on their table.
The minister acknowledged that Nigerians have been complaining about hardship amid rising inflation and promised that the government is taking note of these concerns. He revealed that FEC has directed the Presidential Committee on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to expedite its activities to cushion the suffering of Nigerians, particularly in the transportation sector.
Idris emphasized that the state governments have received the donated rice and are expected to distribute it to those in need. He assured that the federal government will continue to support the state governors and local governments to ensure that food intervention is made available.
In addition to the rice donation, the minister highlighted ongoing efforts to increase fertilizer supply, which has already been processed. He also mentioned plans to upgrade conversion centers for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, which will reduce reliance on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and aid energy transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy.
The government’s efforts are aimed at addressing food shortages and reducing hardship experienced by many Nigerians. The minister affirmed that all governors have received their allocated rice and promised continued support for state governments and local governments to ensure food security for all Nigerians.
