Wike Pledges Land for University of Port Harcourt’s Leadership Centre in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has committed to granting land in the FCT for the establishment of a Centre for Leadership and Political Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. This promise came during a visit from the university’s Governing Council, led by Pro-Chancellor Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, who met with Wike in Abuja on Monday.

Ohuabunwa had requested Wike’s support in developing the centre, which is envisioned as a Nigerian counterpart to the John F. Kennedy Leadership Center in the United States. He noted that if the centre is established, “Wikematics Political Ideology”—a reference to Wike’s own political journey would be incorporated into its curriculum.

The University Of Port Harcourt Pro-Chancellor also highlighted the need for a well-equipped multimedia centre at the university’s Convocation Arena as part of the institution’s preparations for its upcoming 50th anniversary celebration. Ohuabunwa pointed out that the Convocation Arena was built during Wike’s tenure as governor of Rivers State, along with the establishment of the Faculty of Law when he served as Minister of Education.

While Wike agreed to the allocation of land for the leadership centre, he clarified that he would not be using funds from the FCT budget for its construction. Instead, he vowed to personally contribute towards the multimedia centre, pledging N350 million from his own finances and support from his wife and friends.

“Government alone cannot carry this burden. Those who have benefitted from the university and have found success should also give back,” Wike remarked. “I cannot use FCT funds for this project, but I will ensure the land is available for your centre. My wife, friends, and I will fund the multimedia centre you have requested.”

Wike emphasized that his contribution is a personal effort to give back to the institution where he studied political science before embarking on his legal career. He encouraged the university’s management to engage other alumni, including Anambra Governor Charles Soludo, to seek additional support.

Earlier in the meet-up, Ohuabunwa conveyed congratulations to Wike on his appointment as FCT Minister and praised his exceptional performance thus far. He also announced that the university is planning to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025 with the goal of establishing a N10 billion endowment fund. Ohuabunwa noted that Wike would be recognized as one of the distinguished alumni during the anniversary event, honoring his significant contributions to the university’s growth.
