Families Targeted in South Africa Mass Shooting as Authorities Search for Suspects
South African police have launched a manhunt after 17 people were killed in a mass shooting in Lusikisiki, a remote town in the Eastern Cape. The attack, which took place at two homes in the same street, has left the community reeling.
According to police, 12 women and one man were gunned down at one homestead, while three women and one man were killed at a second location. An 18th victim remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
The victims, relatives, and neighbors from Nyathi village in Ngobozana, had gathered to prepare for a traditional mourning ceremony for a mother and daughter who were murdered a year ago. The gathering turned into a massacre late Friday night as assailants stormed the homes.
One survivor, Nomnikelo Ndlovu, recounted the terrifying ordeal to state broadcaster SABC:
“We heard gunshots and doors being kicked in. We tried to hide, but three people were shot. We are still traumatised.”
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu said 19 people had been sleeping in two homes when the attack occurred. Six people, including a two-month-old baby, survived at one location, while there were no survivors at the second.
A team of detectives and forensic experts has been deployed to investigate the crime scene. No arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, officials suspect the attackers may have been known to the victims.
South Africa, which has one of the world’s highest murder rates, saw over 27,000 homicides in 2022. The country’s murder rate stands at 45 per 100,000 people, a stark contrast to the U.S. rate of six per 100,000.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to bring those responsible to justice.
