Canberra – Australia has introduced the National Innovation Visa (NIV) 2025, a new immigration pathway aimed at attracting exceptional talent from around the world. The visa replaces the Global Talent Visa (subclass 858), which closed to new applications in December 2024.
The Australian government designed the NIV to bolster economic growth, research, and innovation by welcoming skilled individuals from diverse fields, including entrepreneurship, academia, the arts, and sports. The visa offers a direct pathway to permanent residency, allowing successful applicants to contribute significantly to the nation’s future development.
A New Visa for Exceptional Talent
The National Innovation Visa (subclass 858) is an invitation-only program. Applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and receive an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs before proceeding with their application.
The visa is open to individuals with internationally recognized achievements in:
- Entrepreneurship and Investment
- Academia and Research
- Arts and Sports
- Professional Excellence
Those granted the NIV will have the opportunity to settle in Australia, where they can contribute to the country’s innovation landscape and economic growth.
Benefits of the National Innovation Visa
Successful applicants will receive several long-term benefits, including:
- Permanent residency in Australia
- A pathway to Australian citizenship upon meeting eligibility requirements
- Work and study rights in any sector
- Sponsorship opportunities for eligible family members
- Access to Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system
- Unrestricted travel to and from Australia for five years
However, new residents may face a waiting period before becoming eligible for certain government benefits.
