Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has killed two armed robbers during a shootout and arrested four others in the Jahi area of Abuja.
The operations, carried out by the Scorpion Squad, also led to the arrest of multiple car snatchers and the recovery of 13 stolen vehicles.
Parading the suspects in Abuja on Wednesday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, detailed the incidents, revealing that the police received a distress call about a robbery in Jahi on October 21. Upon arrival, the robbers opened fire, prompting a gun battle in which two suspects were neutralized. Two others, Haruna Abdullahi (32), from Ikara LGA in Kaduna State, and Yerima Usman (28), from Itoro LGA in Bauchi State, were apprehended.
“Upon sighting the police patrol vehicle, the suspects opened fire, and in the ensuing confrontation, two suspects were neutralized,” Disu explained.
A follow-up operation on October 23 led to the arrest of two more suspects, Abba Ismail, also known as Dan-Abba, and Ashiru Suleiman, who had initially escaped the scene. The suspects confessed to being part of a robbery gang led by one Dan Auwalu, who remains at large. Disu noted that the gang has been linked to multiple robberies in Mabushi, Jahi, and Gishiri, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining members.
Additionally, the police commissioner announced the arrest of five car-snatching suspects. Among them are Arji Thomas (32) from Gwoza LGA, Borno State; Amobi Ndukwe (40) from Awgu LGA, Enugu State; and Amaechi Sampson (26) from Imo State. Disu described the trio as members of a notorious car-snatching gang led by one Chidiebere, who is currently on the run.
The suspects were intercepted while trying to sell a stolen blue Toyota Corolla with registration number KTW 2155D. Disu disclosed that Thomas and Ndukwe are ex-convicts who admitted to committing several car thefts in Garki over the past 18 months.
Another arrest involved Joseph Abang, who was apprehended in Jos, Plateau State, following extensive investigations. Disu said a report had been made by Philemon Olaoluwa, who claimed his mechanic, Abdulhamid Saidu, had absconded with his 2006 ash-colored Honda Accord. Saidu reportedly transported the vehicle to Jos and handed it over to Abang.
Abang, during interrogation, confessed to being part of a car theft syndicate operating in Abuja, Plateau, and Nasarawa States. The police recovered two additional vehicles, a Hyundai Accent and a Peugeot 208, suspected to be stolen, from his premises. Abang remains in custody and will face charges after the investigation concludes.
In another case, a stolen Toyota Hilux with registration number 03A309 FG was recovered. The vehicle, belonging to Frank Udah, was stolen on October 7 by a newly employed security guard, Usman Abubakar, just three days after he was hired. Preliminary investigations revealed Abubakar had taken the vehicle to Nasarawa State and handed it to accomplices who are already facing trial for separate offenses. While the vehicle has been recovered, efforts continue to locate and arrest Abubakar.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combatting crime and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
