The community has called on the Imo State Government and security agencies to intervene and restore peace before more lives are lost.

Owerri, Imo State – A tragic wave of violence has engulfed the Irete autonomous community in Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State, following a brutal invasion by armed hoodlums.

The attack, which took place on the night of September 11, 2024, has left one dead and several others injured, plunging the once peaceful community into fear and confusion.

Miss Ugochi Agbanyi, one of the victims, has died from severe injuries sustained during the attack, while her brother, Uche Agbanyi, is currently fighting for his life at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Owerri (FUTHO).

According to reports, the local security outfit confronted the armed criminals in a fierce gun battle as they raided homes and looted properties. The confrontation forced the attackers to flee into the nearby bushes along the Nworie River. However, as they retreated, they indiscriminately attacked anyone in their path, leaving destruction and casualties in their wake.

Among the victims were siblings Ugochi and Uche Agbanyi, natives of Orlu. After being rushed to a nearby medical facility, doctors recommended their transfer to FUTHO due to the severity of their injuries. Tragically, Ugochi succumbed to her wounds, while the community holds out hope for Uche’s recovery.

The violence has heightened security concerns in the area, with residents now living in fear. “Our community used to be peaceful, but now we are afraid to visit our farms or even stay in our homes. We don’t know what kind of life this is anymore,” said one villager who wished to remain anonymous.

Further incidents have compounded the community’s distress. On Friday night, another resident was severely injured when the hoodlums attacked near AA Rano filling station and Disney Hotel, stealing his motorcycle.

The Irete community has called on the Imo State Government and security agencies to intervene and restore peace before more lives are lost.
