Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Gunmen suspected to be pirates have reportedly kidnapped 10 passengers along the Bonny waterways in Rivers State.

The attack occurred around 10 a.m. as the boat was traveling from Bonny Island to Port Harcourt.

Pepple disclosed that the matter had been reported to the police and urged the government and security agencies to enhance security measures along the waterways to prevent further attacks.

“Ten persons have been kidnapped while traveling from Bonny to Port Harcourt. The others are still afloat in the river, waiting for rescue,” Pepple said. “I want to draw the attention of the Rivers State Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and the Commissioner of Police, whom we visited last week, to this incident that occurred this morning.”

The abduction comes just days after maritime union members protested at the Government House over the frequent attacks on the waterways.
