The management of Federal Polytechnic Ede has expelled 27 Higher National Diploma (HND) students for their involvement in a riot on campus.
The incident, which occurred in May, saw students beating staff members and destroying vehicles in protest of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arresting some of their peers.
Following the unrest, the institution set up an investigative panel to look into the violence and damage inflicted on staff and property.
In a statement, the institution’s spokesperson, Sola Lawal, explained: “The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, constituted an investigative committee to unravel the mysteries surrounding the students’ crisis/rampage of Thursday, May 9th, 2024, leading to the stoning of people at the senior staff club.”
Lawal continued, “The unprovoked actions led to the vandalization of individual and institution’s properties. This unwarranted behavior contradicts the institution’s motto of Knowledge, Skill, and Character.”
The investigation concluded with the expulsion of 27 HND1 and HND2 students. Additionally, eight HND1 students were suspended for two academic sessions, and two former student union leaders were banned from entering both campuses effective immediately.
