Inspector-General of Police Bans Use of POS Machines in Stations Amid Corruption Allegations

In response to mounting concerns over alleged corrupt practices, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive banning the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities nationwide.

The ban, announced by police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, follows public outcry regarding illegal transactions involving POS operators and certain police operatives. Adejobi stated that the prohibition aims to safeguard the integrity and security of police operations while curbing perceived corrupt practices and maintaining discipline within the force.

Failure to comply with the directive will result in severe sanctions on the leadership of affected commands and formations. Adejobi emphasized that any police officer or POS operator found violating the order or engaging in illicit financial transactions will face appropriate disciplinary measures.

The IGP underscored the significant risks posed by the use of electronic payment devices within police facilities, including the potential compromise of sensitive information and facilitation of illicit activities.

Strict adherence to the directive is deemed non-negotiable, with the warning that violators will face both disciplinary and criminal action in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

Despite previous directives, some commands and formations have continued to flout the regulation, prompting the IGP to reiterate the ban and emphasize the importance of compliance among all officers and personnel.
