Governor Sanwo-Olu distributes tools and grants to 1,500 entrepreneurs, advancing Lagos’ mission to empower small businesses and boost economic resilience.
On December 12, 2024, the Lagos State Government demonstrated its commitment to economic empowerment by distributing tools, equipment, and grants to 1,500 entrepreneurs. This initiative, part of the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI) led by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), aims to promote self-reliance and sustainable economic growth across the state.
The MESI program targets micro-enterprises, equipping beneficiaries with resources to start or grow their ventures. At the event, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s dedication to reducing poverty and fostering entrepreneurship:
“This initiative represents our commitment to creating opportunities, reducing poverty, and nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit that defines our people.”
In addition to equipment, 200 women received ₦50,000 each as startup grants to enhance their entrepreneurial capabilities.
Tools for Transformation
The distributed equipment catered to a wide range of businesses, ensuring that recipients have the necessary tools to succeed. Items included:
- Sewing machines
- Pepper grinders
- Hair dryers
- Cake mixers
- Barbing kits
- Standing facial steamers
- Generators
- Agricultural tools and fertilizers
Commissioner for WAPA, Mrs. Bolaji Dada, highlighted the transformative potential of the program:
“These tools symbolize not just instruments of trade but also a pathway to economic independence. We believe in your potential to innovate and excel.”
Mrs. Dada revealed that 70% of the beneficiaries were graduates of WAPA’s skills acquisition centers, further underscoring the program’s focus on skill development. She encouraged the recipients to embrace resilience and creativity in their entrepreneurial endeavors:
“Seize this opportunity and work tirelessly toward achieving your dreams. These tools are stepping stones to greater success.”
Since its inception, the MESI program has empowered over 5,000 individuals, demonstrating its significant contribution to poverty reduction and community development in Lagos. By targeting vulnerable groups and small businesses.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated:
