Bayelsa Bye-Election: Three Policemen Feared Dead as Boat Capsizes

A devastating boat accident has claimed the lives of two female passengers, with 18 others rescued, in a tragic incident on the Kwalgwai River in Auyo Local Government Area.

According to the Jigawa State Police Command, the canoe carrying approximately 20 marketers from Kwalgwai village capsized due to powerful waves and overloading, resulting in the deaths and rescue efforts.

The incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 10:00 PM, with a team of policemen, divers, fishermen, and good Samaritans swiftly responding to the scene. Eighteen passengers were rescued alive, while two female passengers were initially reported missing.

On Monday, the body of 18-year-old Habiba Ado was recovered and pronounced dead at Auyo Hospital. Later, the second missing woman was also found dead, bringing the total death toll to two.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by a combination of powerful waves and overloading, making it difficult for the canoe driver to steer the vessel.
