During a meeting with Belgian Ambassador Pieter Leenknegt in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, revealed that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) project is nearing completion, with 95% of the work done.
The project, aimed at enhancing public transport in the capital city, is scheduled for inauguration in May.
Wike highlighted the initiative’s importance in decongesting the city and providing an efficient transportation option for residents. He credited President Bola Tinubu’s directive to expedite the project, ensuring its completion within his tenure.
The Minister also discussed ongoing efforts to improve the public transport system in the FCT, including discussions with private investors and plans to register and regulate transport operators. He emphasized the need for registered and identifiable operators to enhance security and transparency for residents.
In response, Ambassador Leenknegt expressed interest in the FCT’s transportation strategies and commended the progress made, particularly in reducing traffic congestion and promoting greenery. He indicated the Belgian government’s willingness to explore potential partnerships in areas of mutual interest.
Construction of taxi and bus stations, aimed at providing centralized access to registered operators, is set to begin pending approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement, according to Wike.
The nearing completion of the ARMT project marks a significant milestone in Abuja’s efforts to improve its public transport infrastructure, promising increased convenience and efficiency for its residents.
