This latest incident follows a similar fire outbreak earlier in the week. On Sunday night, a fire gutted the Ajah Market near Alesh Bus Stop in Lekki, Lagos, destroying shops and goods valued in the millions.
Lagos, Nigeria – A devastating fire outbreak on Thursday afternoon engulfed a furniture market in the Ojota area of Lagos State, causing the destruction of goods worth millions of naira.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement.
Oke-Osanyintolu explained that the fire, which began around 1 p.m., was triggered by an electrical surge from a nearby power transformer. The inferno quickly spread, consuming several shops used for the production and sale of furniture items.
“Upon the arrival of the Tiger Response Team at the scene at 2:04 p.m., it was discovered that several shops were completely engulfed in flames,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Investigations conducted by the LRT revealed that the immediate cause of the fire was an electrical power surge from a transformer located beside the market.”
He noted that while the fire resulted in extensive damage to property, there were no recorded casualties or injuries.
“Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained,” he stated. “However, the inferno led to the destruction of properties worth a fortune.”
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, were quickly deployed to contain the blaze. The collaboration among emergency agencies prevented the fire from spreading further.
“LASEMA, working in conjunction with other stakeholders, successfully curtailed the fire’s spread, averting more widespread damage. The agency also managed crowd control alongside its primary firefighting duties,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
This latest incident follows a similar fire outbreak earlier in the week. On Sunday night, a fire gutted the Ajah Market near Alesh Bus Stop in Lekki, Lagos, destroying shops and goods valued in the millions. Oke-Osanyintolu said the Sunday fire was also contained by LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service before it could spread to adjacent buildings.
Both incidents underscore the recurrent challenge of fire outbreaks in Lagos markets, often resulting in massive economic losses.
