A violent confrontation between hoodlums in the Ile-Epo area of Lagos State has left a local market in ruins, with numerous injuries and significant damage reported.

The clashes, which began on Wednesday night, continued into Thursday morning, culminating in a devastating arson attack that saw several shops and merchandise set ablaze. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “chaotic,” with flames engulfing multiple storefronts and screams filling the air.

“It was chaos. Flames were everywhere, and all you could hear were screams and the shattering of glass,” a vendor at the Lagos market explained.

Police said their attempts to quell the fire were met with resistance. “Our team was dispatched promptly, but the intensity of the mob and their hostility hampered our intervention efforts,” a Lagos Police spokesman explained.

The police are currently investigating the cause of the fight and have vowed to restore order in the area. However, their efforts were further hindered when a Lagos State Fire Service truck was attacked with stones by a hostile crowd, forcing it to retreat. “We attempted to access the scene to douse the flames, but it became too dangerous to proceed,” a firefighter at the scene narrated.

Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and have promised to increase security in the area to prevent further escalation.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Lagos State in maintaining law and order, and the need for increased community engagement and conflict resolution strategies to prevent such violent clashes.
