In a recent inspection visit, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed how altering the initial design of the Second Niger Bridge bypass road resulted in significant savings of N300 billion for taxpayers.

Umahi made this revelation during an inspection of the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway section IV (Aba-Port Harcourt), handled by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd (CCECC).

Accompanied by leaders from various political spheres, Umahi highlighted the defective design of the bypass during a visit to Asaba and Onitsha, leading to the decision for a new design, which ultimately saved the substantial amount.

The Minister reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to cost-effective and durable road infrastructure, ensuring taxpayers receive value for money.

Emphasizing the importance of efficient road construction, Umahi urged contractors to consider the plight of road users and ensure passability, especially during the rainy season. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the support in changing the narrative of Nigeria’s road infrastructure.

During the inspection, Umahi also visited other ongoing projects, including the Upgrading of the East-West road section and the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. He urged contractors to accelerate their pace to meet milestones ahead of the rainy season.

Stakeholders accompanying the Minister commended President Tinubu’s appointment of Umahi, describing him as a fitting leader for the Ministry of Works.

Former government officials and political figures expressed satisfaction with Umahi’s dedication and the quality of ongoing road projects, emphasizing the significant cost savings achieved through efficient project management.
