Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by ex-governor Babangida Aliyu, highlighted Nigeria’s economic struggles during a book launch event in Abuja.
He attributed the nation’s economic woes to rampant crude oil theft, estimating that over 80% of Nigeria’s oil production is stolen daily.
Speaking at the same event, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, former Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, criticized Nigeria’s leadership, stating that it has failed the people and emphasized the urgent need for reforms to address the leadership deficit.
Abdullahi lamented Nigeria’s inadequate power generation capacity, despite its large population, and emphasized the need for collective acknowledgment of past failures to pave the way for progress. He advocated for a return to the drawing board to devise solutions for the country’s challenges.
Former National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Secondus, called for judicial reforms to ensure electoral decisions are determined by the people rather than the courts.
However, former Attorney General Kanu Agabi (SAN) defended the judiciary, arguing that it has played a crucial role in preserving Nigeria’s unity.
Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, former national chairman of the PDP, asserted that he was ousted from office for advocating internal democracy within political parties. He argued that embracing internal democracy would diminish the courts’ involvement in political party affairs.
The event underscored the growing calls for reforms and a reevaluation of Nigeria’s leadership structure to address its socio-economic challenges.
