Johannesburg, South Africa – Veteran South African gospel artist Solomon Molokoane, popularly known as Solly Moholo, has passed away at the age of 65, his management confirmed on Tuesday.

The award-winning gospel icon had been hospitalized for several weeks following an illness he contracted while on a music tour in Botswana last month. His family revealed last month that Moholo had suffered a stroke and was experiencing multiple organ failure, prompting a public appeal for financial assistance to cover his medical costs.

“It is with great sadness that we are informing you on behalf of the Molokoane family that our beloved legend ‘Solly Moholo’ has sadly passed on,” read a statement from his management team. “He passed away on 2 October 2024 while in hospital.”

Moholo, who rose to fame in the early 2000s, became a household name for his contribution to traditional South African gospel music. He was celebrated for hits such as “Die poppe sal dans,” “Ka letsatsi labofelo,” and “Tsoha Jonase,” among others. His unique style and energetic performances made him a beloved figure in the gospel music scene.

Tributes have been pouring in from fellow gospel singers, fans, and political leaders. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) praised Moholo’s impact on the industry, describing him as a “true icon.”

“His powerful voice, passion for spreading the word of God, and dedication to uplifting the spirits of many through his music will forever be remembered,” said ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula.

The South African government also expressed its condolences, posting on X (formerly known as Twitter): “You will live forever in the hearts of South Africans Ntate.”

The late singer’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they mourn and make preparations for his burial.

Moholo’s passing marks the end of a significant era in South African gospel music, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
