Fresh National Grid Collapse Causes Widespread Blackout Across Nigeria

In the early hours of Monday, April 15th, 2024, Nigeria experienced yet another collapse of its national grid, resulting in a significant loss of power supply across the country.

This blackout was attributed to a fire incident at the Afam power generating station, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Officials from various Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) confirmed the outage, reporting a sharp decline in power generation to just 64.70 megawatts at 2:42 am.

The Independent System Operator (ISO) recorded a mere 266.50 megawatts from select power plants shortly after the collapse.

Jos DisCo and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) were among the DisCos affected by the outage, with customers in multiple states, including Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo, left without power. EEDC expressed optimism in resolving the situation, citing gradual restoration efforts.

TCN assured the public that the grid had been fully restored after isolating the affected section and stabilizing the system.

The company emphasized its commitment to bolstering the resilience and reliability of the national grid through continued investment in infrastructure.
