NiDCOM Commences Inquiry into Abdul Olatunji’s Extended Detention in South Africa
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has launched an investigation into the case of Abdul Olatunji, a Nigerian who has reportedly been detained in South Africa since 2019 without facing trial. In a statement issued on Tuesday, NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, emphasized the Nigerian government’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind Olatunji’s situation.
Olatunji’s family has alleged that South African authorities have fabricated charges against him, resulting in his prolonged incarceration. They are urging the Nigerian government for immediate intervention in the matter. NiDCOM confirmed that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa has reached out to the South African government to seek clarification regarding the allegations.
The statement from NiDCOM noted, “We have received information about this case, and we are taking swift action to address it. Following the news of Mr. Olatunji’s situation, we contacted the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa, who has formally asked for an explanation from South African officials in light of the serious accusations.”
It was highlighted that this case had not been reported to NiDCOM or the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa until recently. Nevertheless, they are collaborating with the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to ensure a comprehensive investigation is conducted to pursue justice.
In a show of solidarity, the Nigerian Women’s Association in South Africa has extended its support to Olatunji, announcing plans to visit him in prison. Elizabeth Johnson, the group’s president, stated that arrangements for the visitation were being finalized following media coverage of the case.
NiDCOM’s statement also revealed that the Commission’s Chairman has personally communicated with Olatunji’s brother, assuring the family of the government’s dedication to resolving the issue. “Abdul Olatunji has reportedly been held since 2019 without access to a fair trial. His family insists he is a victim of false and malicious charges orchestrated by South African authorities, and they have appealed for urgent intervention from the Federal Government. NiDCOM pledges to thoroughly investigate this matter to ensure justice and fairness prevail,” the statement concluded.
