Popular Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. According to reports, Onwenu collapsed Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.
She was subsequently pronounced dead at a hospital located in Victoria Island after being taken there for medical attention.
The Guardian Newspaper reported that Onwenu was performing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, when she slumped. Her family has yet to confirm the news of her death.
Onyeka Onwenu, born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, began her music career in the 1980s. She released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981 and went on to produce numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.” Onwenu also enjoyed a successful acting career in Nollywood, winning several awards for her contributions to music and film, and being recognized as a pioneer of Nigerian music.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Onwenu had a notable career in politics. She was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
Throughout her life, Onwenu was honored for her contributions to Nigerian society. In 2011, she was awarded the National Honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). She has been recognized as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations.
