The reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery marks a turning point in Nigeria’s energy sector, with many Nigerians eagerly awaiting the promised benefits from the revitalised facility.
Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Port Harcourt Refining Company Ltd, located in Rivers State, officially resumed operations on Tuesday after numerous missed deadlines by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
The development marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to revamp its oil production capabilities.
Former Anambra State Governor and prominent politician, Peter Obi, has called on NNPCL to ensure transparency and accountability in managing the refinery’s operations. While commending the resuscitation of the facility, Obi stressed the importance of providing Nigerians with clear insights into the operations of the refinery and its expected economic impact.
In a statement, Obi congratulated NNPCL on the achievement, describing it as a long-overdue step toward strengthening Nigeria’s oil sector.
“I wish to congratulate the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for fulfilling the long-standing promise of revamping the old Port Harcourt refinery,” he said.
The refinery, which now boasts an installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, is expected to dispatch approximately 200 trucks daily, carrying refined products. Obi highlighted the potential benefits for Nigerians, particularly in terms of reduced pump prices and a boost to the overall economy.
He also expressed optimism about the ongoing revival of the Kaduna Refinery, which he believes will enhance productivity, improve transportation, and ease economic burdens across the country. However, Obi underscored the need for NNPCL to operate with openness and to deliver measurable outcomes that align with the country’s oil resource management goals.
“This achievement is a step in the right direction,” Obi added, “but it is crucial to emphasise the importance of transparency in the operations of the NNPC.”
