Port Harcourt – A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has directed both the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to appear before it regarding the ongoing police occupation of all 23 local government areas in the state.
The court made this order in response to a lawsuit brought by the Initiative for Transparent Strategy and Good Leadership, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). The court instructed the NGO to notify the IGP, the CP, and the Attorney General of the Federation about the proceedings.
Additionally, the State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, and the Head of Service of the state have been included in the notice as second defendants.
The NGO’s application seeks to address the police’s persistent blockade of local government council secretariats, which the group argues is impeding Rivers State residents from accessing state government employment opportunities.
Justice Mohammed Turaki, who is presiding over the case, mandated that the defendants explain why an ex parte order should not be issued against them concerning the barricade.
The court has adjourned the matter to August 16, 2024, for a hearing on the motion.
Outside the courtroom, Solomon Tamuno, counsel for the applicants, emphasized that the aim is to lift the police barricades, claiming that the continous occupation of 23 Rivers LGAs are obstructing local employment processes.
