Independent marketers are awaiting a meeting with the management of the Dangote Refinery to discuss direct supply, which could ease the petrol scarcity.
Lagos, Nigeria – A severe petrol scarcity has gripped Lagos, Ogun, and other states, with independent marketers loading the product at N780 per litre, a 31% increase from the previous price of N595 per litre.
Long queues have resurfaced at filling stations, with pump prices ranging from N685 to N950 per litre. Hawkers are selling petrol at exorbitant prices, between N1,000 and N1,500 per litre. Transporters have increased fares by over 200%, with a trip from Ikorodu to Victoria Island now costing N6,000, up from N2,000.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has attributed the shortage to rains, lightning, and thunderstorms, which have hindered transportation of petroleum products. However, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has blamed government policies, including the flotation of the currency, for the economic hardship.
Officials of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) are absent from filling stations, leading to irregularities, including pump manipulation.
