Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed his willingness to accept a merger with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or other parties if it means bettering Nigeria and governing properly.
Obi’s statement comes after Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, said he would support Obi if the party chose him as its candidate from the South-East in 2027. However, Obi emphasized that any merger must prioritize improving governance and aiding the poor, rather than merely seeking to win elections or gain state control.
“I commend Atiku for his statement, especially where he said he will support me if it goes to the South East,” Obi said in an interview with NoireTV. “On the issue of a merger and the coming together of parties, I have always said that as long as any merger or any coming together is to better Nigeria and for governing properly, I am for it.”
Obi stressed that he is not desperate to be president, but rather desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor, as the country has immense potential. He reiterated that any merger must focus on building a better Nigeria, whether at the party level, individual level, or any other level.
This development comes after the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused Obi and Atiku of being united by their mutual desperation to be president and disdain for President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to transforming the nation. Both Obi and Atiku lost the 2023 presidential election to Tinubu.
